Ingredients:
For the Filling:
1 lb ground Italian sausage (mild or hot, your preference)
1/2 large onion, diced
1 bell pepper (any color), diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1/4 cup marinara sauce or tomato paste (optional, for moisture and flavor)
For the Bread Boats:
1 large baguette or ciabatta loaf (or 3-4 individual small hoagie rolls)
1 tbsp olive oil or butter, melted (for brushing bread)
For the Cheese:
8-12 slices American cheese (or a mix of shredded mozzarella, cheddar, or provolone)
Extra cheese slices for topping, as shown in your image, if desired for a “cheesy skirt”
Equipment:
Blackstone griddle
Spatula(s)
Cutting board and knife
Bowl for mixing filling
Foil dome or lid (optional, for melting cheese)
Instructions:
Prepare the Bread Boats:
Cut the baguette/loaf into 3-4 equal-sized sections, about 4-6 inches long.
Carefully hollow out the inside of each bread section, leaving a sturdy crust and bottom. You can use your fingers or a small knife. Save the removed bread for breadcrumbs or discard.
