Whataburger Patty Melt

Whataburger Patty Melt

Brandy February 7, 2025

Imagine biting into a Whataburger Patty Melt: the crunch of perfectly toasted bread, the melt of cheeses, and the rich flavor of caramelized onions married with beef. This Texas diner classic brings the comfort of a hearty meal right into your kitchen. Give this recipe a try for a taste of true Southern charm.

Ingredients:

* 4 tablespoons salted butter, divided
* 1 large yellow onion, sliced
* 20 ounces lean ground beef, shaped into 4 patties (5 ounces each)
* Salt and pepper to taste
* 4 slices Texas toast
* 4 tablespoons butter, softened
* 4 slices Monterey Jack cheese
* 4 slices cheddar cheese

* Creamy Pepper Sauce:

* 1/2 cup mayonnaise
* 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
* 2 tablespoons lemon juice
* 1 tablespoon finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo
* 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
* 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Directions:

1️⃣ In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt a portion of the butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion, season with a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden, about 30-45 minutes.
2️⃣ Season beef patties with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes per side or to desired doneness. Place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt as they cook.
3️⃣ Combine mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, chipotle peppers, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and sugar in a small bowl for the sauce. Mix well and set aside.
4️⃣ Butter each slice of Texas toast. Toast in the pan on one side, flip, then assemble by placing two beef patties on each slice, topped with caramelized onions.
5️⃣ Toast the remaining bread slices. Spread the creamy pepper sauce on one side and place it sauce-side down onto the stacked patties. Close the sandwich with the second slice of bread, toasted side out.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 55 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes | Servings: 4 servings

✅ Experiment with different types of cheese like provolone or Swiss for a twist.
✅ Add a slice of tomato or some pickles inside the sandwich for extra freshness and crunch.
✅ For a lighter version, use whole wheat bread and low-fat cheeses.
✅ The creamy pepper sauce can be spiced up with additional chipotle or toned down with more mayonnaise.
